Marvel in Milan – Milan hasn’t always been the fashionista town it is today. It was once thought to be nothing more than Rome’s shabby stepsister, but today’s Milan is gorgeous designer threads and ongoing excitement.
When Milan was chosen to be the home for the World Expo in 2015, the city went into upgrade mode. Skyscrapers were built in the Piazza, the old canal area, Darsena, was renovated, and they cleaned the Duomo. If you were in Milan prior to 2015, you’ll be surprised at all the new diners and chic clubs, especially in the 5 Vie area. It’s no surprise at all, really, as Milan has been reinventing herself for over 2,000 years now.
In addition to bars and restaurants, incredibly impressive museums have also opened. Prada’s new headquarters was designed by Rem Koolhaas on the grounds of what was once a distillery. At the Prada headquarters, you’ll also find one of the city’s gems, Bar Luce, which was designed by Wes Anderson, a filmmaker from Milan. And the city wouldn’t be complete without some fashion history thrown in the mix – Armani Silos features various garments and other memorabilia from this house of fashion. And if that’s not fashion overload, check out the Museo del Culture in Tortona. Here you’ll be treated to exhibits, contemporary art pieces, and archaeological items from cultures around the world. some of the anthropological pieces date back to 1200 BC.
There’s a lot to see in the new Milan. As you may have guessed, if there’s a fashion show or other convention it’s not the best time to visit. Restaurants and other public places can get extremely crowded and traffic is exponential. One of the most highly attended events is Women’s Fashion Week which is held in both February and September. If you do happen to visit during these months, don’t worry – there are plenty of things to do and see outside the downtown area.
One last thing to know – it’s a good idea not to visit during August. Many of the nation’s businesses close during this month for national holidays. Contact the local tourism office to find out the best times to visit Milan.
