Log Off at Bawah Reserve – How many times have you sworn off social media, your cell phone, or some other reminder of today’s digital lifestyle only to mindlessly find yourself checking a post or posting something yourself?
Sometimes detoxing from electronics isn’t enough – you need to be alone with only the sounds of nature. And no way to post that incredible pic you just took until you get back to civilization. In Indonesia, there is such a place – Bawah Reserve, about 80 minutes by plane from Singapore. Pulau Bawah is part of the archipelago situated between Borneo and the peninsula.
As your small, ten-seat plane begins its descent, the turquoise waters below come into sharp contrast against the greens of the lush flora. Your pilot may no sooner land your plane when he jumps into those warm waters, and you won’t blame him.
But, as a guest of Bawah Reserve, there’s no need to rush. On the resort island of Pulau Bawah, you’ll feel right at home just taking your time. It’s the only resort that sets their clocks ahead of other islands in Indonesia, making cocktail happy hour coincide with the magnificent Indonesian sunset –a sunset quite unlike any you’ve ever witnessed.
But it hasn’t been all smooth sailing for this Anambas island chain resort. Before the resort opened in 2018, illegal fishing by dynamite was threatening its delicate reef system. The three lagoons are now stewarded by Tim Hartnoll, the man behind Bawah Reserve.
Eleven of the 36 villas were built as over-water suites and all were constructed of recycled wood products and bamboo. And if being on a private island isn’t enough – the suites all provide unobstructed views of the South China Sea, air-conditioned quarters, showers heated by solar power, WiFi, and some even have retractable walls for true open-air living.
Activities include massages and body scrubs, authentic Indonesian meals, and ambling till your heart’s content. The biggest draw, however, is the surrounding ocean. Wading through these warm waters with sea life like giant clams and parrotfish will have you willing time to slow down so you can linger just a bit longer.
